The Restaurant of the year 2019 was recently named in Paris, with a small restaurant in South Africa winning the prestigious award.
Located 150km from Cape Town, with a mostly female staff, who have no formal training, Wolfgat’s was crowned by the World Restaurants Awards, a new ranking to promote the vast diversity of the international culinary scene. The restaurant, which opened two years ago, was voted Restaurant of the Year by 100 member jury of famous leaders, journalists, and influencers who selected winners in 18 categories which range from street food to “Chef of the Year without tattoos”.
Speaking on the award, Wolfgat’s chef, Kobus Van der Merwe said ” I don’t feel like I deserve it, it’s my collaborators, who go out every day to pick herbs, succulent plants and spinach that should be here, It’s their baby. I look forward to celebrating with them with a tall glass of South African sparkling wine ”
